Located on the Rhode Island shoreline overlooking Quonochontaug Pond and the Atlantic Ocean just beyond, Weekapaug Inn offers quintessentially New England accommodations that effortlessly combine casual comfort and luxurious furnishings.

Farm-to-table dining utilizes the finest and freshest locally sourced ingredients, and inspired amenities and resort activities are designed to create extraordinary guest experiences.

Originally built in 1899 and again in 1939 following the Hurricane of 1938, our historic inn underwent a $20 million renovation in 2012 that preserves our storied past while offering guests a wealth of modern conveniences.

In January 2013, just three months after opening, the Inn was invited into Relais & Châteaux, an association that sets the world standard for excellence in hospitality.

The exterior is covered in red cedar shingles, accented by dark brown trim and red shutters. The Weekapaug Inn in Westerly, Rhode Island features 33 guest rooms, including four two-bedroom Signature Suites, boasting modern Yankee décor, marble-accented bathrooms, feather-top beds and luxury linens.

Generous indoor and outdoor function spaces offer flexible venues for private gatherings, business conferences, board meetings and magical waterfront weddings.

Dining at the Inn is a farm-to-table affair. Inspired by the coastal traditions of New England, The Restaurant, the Inn’s main dining venue, offers comfortably elegant dishes that highlight the best in seasonal, locally raised and harvested produce.

In restoring and updating the old inn, the architects took great care to ensure the rooms were spacious, private and comfortable. Each room offers a unique view, room layout and furnishings.

This is in the tradition of the original Inn, where even today, former guests and their descendants fondly remember the location and views of the rooms they insisted on returning to each year.

In the spirit of each room’s uniqueness, designer and long-time Weekapaug resident Nancy Taylor selected a distinct textile pattern for the sewn and upholstered pieces in each guest room, ensuring that every room has been fitted with a vintage piece from the old Inn and a selection of modern pieces.

Weekapaug Inn offers an ever-evolving assortment of complimentary activities for guests to enjoy. In addition to daily tours of the Inn, things to do in our Westerly, Rhode Island location may include nature-based outings with our Resident Naturalist, wine tastings with our talented Sommelier, boating excursions, kayaking, biking, bird watching, roasting s’mores by the fire pit and so much more.

Guests can also enjoy unrestricted access to complimentary daily resort activities at Ocean House, Weekapaug Inn’s sister property, a short 15-minute drive down the road in Watch Hill.

Conveniently located less than two hours from Boston and two and one half hours from Manhattan, the idyllic, tranquil location of our Rhode Island waterfront hotel provides the perfect year-round retreat.

THE HISTORY
Our story begins in 1899, when Frederick Buffum, a Rhode Island-born entrepreneur, and his wife, Phebe, opened a small inn. Sensing the appeal of the Weekapaug beach community, the Buffums constructed the Inn on a prominent spit of land between the Atlantic Ocean and salt pond that offered stunning, panoramic views.

With the goal to make it a resort for families like themselves, the Buffums exuded hospitality, welcoming guests at the front door with cheer and genuine warmth.

This camaraderie, coupled with the Inn’s spectacular location and carefree schedule of boating, swimming, sporting and socializing, quickly made the Inn a popular destination for guests from throughout New England and beyond.

The Buffums found themselves expanding the Inn from its initial capacity of 30 to a space where more than 100 guests could appreciate their renowned hospitality. Like migrating birds, Inn guests returned year after year, filling the place to its rafters.

Because of the precariousness of its beachfront location, the Buffums rebuilt their Rhode Island family resort on a more sheltered site on the western shore of Quonochontaug Pond after the original building was damaged by the hurricane of 1938.

The family’s farsighted wisdom to protect the barrier beach, which included convincing other landholders who had lost homes to rebuild back from the dunes, has resulted in a privately owned, secluded enclave in an unparalleled setting that has changed only minimally, with many of its cottages dating back to the early days of Weekapaug, still occupied by descendants of original families. The place retained its beauty, serenity, and coastal character, and the annual migration to the Inn continued for decades.

Although the broader community thrived, the Inn’s single-season business became a difficult economic model for the Buffums to sustain into the twenty-first century. After nearly seventy years at its “new” location, in 2007 the fourth generation of innkeepers regretfully closed their Inn, to the sorrow of many loyal guests, friends and neighbors.

Happily, the story does not end there. In 2010, Weekapaug resident Lang Wheeler teamed with Watch Hill resident Chuck Royce to create a new plan they would restore the Inn to discerning standards of comfort, making it available to guests in all seasons.

At the same time, they resolved to maintain the traditions and values that have made the Weekapaug Inn a treasure to those who know it, and a great find for those who will now discover its charms.

With its coastal location and welcoming accommodations, the Inn has become a cherished location for luxury weddings, relaxing vacations, and weekend getaways. The owners and Weekapaug Inn staff cordially invite you to experience this newest chapter at this historic Rhode Island inn.

Adjacent to the pool, our exercise room features state-of-the-art cardiovascular and strength training equipment and a movement studio for regularly scheduled yoga and Pilates classes. In the warmer months, swing open the French doors and allow the sea breezes to caress your skin and soothe your mind, body and soul.

THE BEACH
Slip into your flip-flops and grab a book. When you’re staying at our resort with a beach, a quick stroll along the harbor sidewalk will bring you to our beautiful sandy Weekapaug Beach. Two miles of pristine beach are just over the dune!

Halfway along the boardwalk and there’s the first glimpse of ocean – that’s Block Island on the horizon, framed like a poster between wild beach roses. Another twenty yards and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean unfold.

To the left, sandy beach stretches on for close to two miles without a building in sight. Watch the gulls and hear them call. Let the rhythm of the waves slow your heartbeat and awaken your senses. It’s time to relax and let the world go by. It’s a beach experience like no other!

The winter beach in Rhode Island is a wonderful and sometimes unappreciated resource. Winter sand is firm underfoot, which makes for great walking. On clear days, sunshine reflects off the ocean and adds unexpected warmth.

Set off down the beach at a smart pace and soon you will be shedding layers and feeling exhilarated. The lower half of the beach is always free of snow and ice – even the morning after a snowfall – and so oftentimes guests ski along the upper beach, while companions walk in sneakers along the hard dry sand closer to the tideline.

The Bathhouse is our summertime gateway to the beach. Situated just behind the dunes, it offers convenient access to all the amenities you need for a great day by the water.

There are beautiful bathrooms and roomy storage lockers, freshly laundered beach towels along with premium beach chairs and umbrellas, and cheerful attendants who shuttle the equipment to the beach and set it up at whatever spot feels just right to you.

The concession counter serves snacks, beverages and lunch items for you to take to the beach or enjoy on the beautiful back deck, where beer and wine are also served. An added bonus, arrive early for a day at the beach and make the Bathhouse your base until your room is ready.

On checkout day, the Bathhouse amenities allow you to stretch your beach relaxation through the full afternoon in comfort. If you depart directly from the beach, you will appreciate the four lovely showers facilities complete with shampoos, body washes, fresh towels and dryers.

FAMILY FRIENDLY
Families love Weekapaug Inn. We have a big, beautiful grassy back yard, lawn games, Nature Craft programs, bikes, boats, kites, fishing poles and a super safe community for family fun.

Kids also love the dynamic young staff at the Boathouse. They are a bit like camp counselors. Crew members are well trained and are overseen by our Naturalist. Whether your kids are interested in crabbing, crafts, rockets, or yard games, we will work hard to ensure they have a fun and educational experience.

BIKING
Biking in and around Weekapaug is great fun. The community of Weekapaug is relatively flat and encompasses one square mile of crisscrossing private roads that are scenic and free of heavy traffic.

For those seeking a longer outing, our men and women’s hybrid bicycles are ready and waiting. Those looking to try family bicycling in Rhode Island can enjoy a six-mile excursion to Watch Hill, a picturesque locale with harbor-front shopping and stately seaside homes that makes the perfect cycle holiday destination.

While there, explore the Watch Hill Lighthouse with its 300-degree ocean views, take a spin on the famed Watch Hill carousel or visit our sister property, Ocean House. As with all of our gear, we take pride in providing high-quality, well-maintained equipment. The Inn maintains a fleet of 15 Priority Classic Plus 3-speed cruisers and children’s bicycles in two sizes.

SQUASH & CROQUET
Whether you are an avid player or a beginner seeking an alternative workout, squash is an exhilarating game. Two championship squash courts are available to Inn guests at the nearby Ocean House in Watch Hill.

Croquet is a classic summer outdoor sports game played in back yards across the land. But at Ocean House, it is played in the highest style on a stunning formal court with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. Pull on your whites and step back in time to enjoy a game or take a lesson with the on-site professional – no experience required. The championship court at the Ocean House is just a short drive away in Watch Hill.

GOLF & TENNIS
Inn staff can make private golf arrangements for you at one of our local courses. One of our favorite courses is the Mountain Course at our sister property, Preserve Sporting Club, located in nearby Richmond, Rhode Island. This championship course, carved from an untamed American wilderness, challenges your skills and engages your mind.

Designed by award-winning golf architect Robert McNeil and the Northeast Golf Company, the 18-hole, par 3 course, along with its hybrid cross country par 34 configuration, stand as two of the most challenging yet playable executive courses in the Northeast.

Lake of Isles, is set in the beautiful forests of North Stonington, Connecticut. Designed by acclaimed golf architect Rees Jones around a 90-acre lake, this golf course features a winning mix of challenge and scenery, and provides an exciting round for golfers at all levels.

Guests have access to an 18-hole private course, an 18-hole resort course and the elegant 50,000-square-foot clubhouse. The 18-hole South Course features 7,359 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.

Is tennis part of your ideal vacation? The Inn maintains a membership just down the road at Pond View Racquet Club. You’ll have access to year-round tennis with four Har-Tru outdoor courts and three hard indoor courts.

Inn guests may take advantage of private instruction during their stay and can usually find games and partners for this outdoor activity in our vibrant Rhode Island tennis community.

THE LAWN
The great backyard of our Rhode Island resort – known as The Lawn – offers what so many of us need in a family vacation getaway: sunshine, fresh air, room to breathe and sweeping views of a beautiful seascape. The Lawn features dozens of Adirondack chairs for relaxing and ample space to play ball, or simply run and roll in the grass.

Family and friends can reconnect and escape the relentless pace of modern life by engaging in old-time diversions, including shuffleboard, bocce, bean bag toss and horseshoes. At the edge of the Lawn, our Boathouse stores kites and balls for guest use, and has a lovely stone patio under a canopy of shade trees.

MOTORBOAT OUTINGS
InnSight is the Inn’s high-speed, shallow-draft motorboat, offering exploration, fun and adventure. InnSight, is fast, stable and can easily maneuver shallow water, allowing for an in-depth exploration of our 750-acre lagoon. The boat accommodates up to six passengers and our Captain.

All Rhode Island boating is subject to weather and may be suspended at the discretion of the on-duty staff and/or Captain. State law requires that passengers under 13 years of age wear life jackets while aboard. The Inn offers life jackets in a full range of sizes (infant through XL).

NATURE SAFARI
Hold on tight… We’re going for an adventure! With a burst of speed, Innsight cruises down Quonochontaug Pond. Once we arrive at our destination, we raise the ultra-quiet motor and casually coast through marshes, searching for crabs, fish, birds and other notable wildlife.

You’ll hunt for moon snails from the privacy of a remote beach and, with a bit of luck, find a sea urchin to touch. These trips are fun and educational at the same time.

WONDERFUL WANDERING
The speed of the motorboat and a shallow-draft hull allows us to explore wherever our whim takes us. We will see natural vistas, check out the breachway to the sea, visit an oyster farm and explore small harbors with beautiful waterfront homes. Great fun with no big agenda.

LIGHT FISHING
Light in two ways: 1) We use light tackle and typically cast for smaller varieties of fish within the calm waters; 2) We limit the trips to one hour to one hour and one half.

This charter is great for adults who want a dedicated guide but don’t want to spend all day on the water. Children will also enjoy the experience. For longer charters, we work with local guides.

WATER CRAFT
The backyard at the Inn faces Quonochontaug Salt Pond, a tidal lagoon roughly the size of Central Park in New York City. Sheltered by a barrier beach, the waters of the salt pond are warmer and calmer than the ocean and are ideal for paddle sports and sailing.

Rocky shorelines, grassy marshes and wide-open expanses offer abundant and diverse areas to explore. Our resort on the water has acres of sandy shallows that offer ideal training grounds for new paddlers.

The Boathouse maintains a fleet of Rhode Island boat rentals with approximately 35 top-brand small boats and accessories, which guests can take out daily between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. All boats are impeccably maintained and cleaned by staff members who will outfit you with the craft of your choice and launch you on your adventure.

Whether you’re looking to go kayaking in the morning light or head out by sailboat at sunset, we’re happy to help you see the sights of Quonochontaug Salt Pond and the Rhode Island shoreline. The Boathouse has life jackets sized infant through large adult.

Use of the Inn’s boats is included in your room rate. Guests at Ocean House, Watch Hill Inn and the Cottage Collection are welcome to join the fun and may charge usage fees to their room account.
